LR Truck Licence
The LR licence allows operation of vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Mass exceeding 4.5 tonnes. This entry-level heavy vehicle licence suits drivers transitioning from standard Class C vehicles.
Small deliveries, local transport. Fastest to obtain. Best entry point if you’re new to heavy vehicles.
MR Truck Licence
The Medium Rigid licence permits operation of vehicles with a GVM exceeding 8 tonnes. MR licensees can drive larger delivery trucks and service vehicles found throughout Northern Beaches industries.
Larger delivery trucks, service vehicles. Moderate step up in responsibility and earning potential.
HR Truck Licence
The HR truck licence is the most sought-after licence class in Northern Beaches. It allows operation of vehicles with three or more axles, including heavy trucks and buses. HR drivers often command premium employment opportunities.
Large trucks with 3+ axles. Most in-demand. Opens doors to construction, logistics, long-haul work. What most people aim for.
HC Truck Licence
The Heavy Combination licence enables operation of articulated vehicles like semi-trailers. HC licence holders work primarily in long-distance haulage and major transport operations.
Articulated trucks and semi-trailers. Significant earning jump. Requires HR first.
What’s Actually Involved in Getting Licensed?
The NSW Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) requires all truck licence applicants to complete a competency-based assessment. Here’s what you’ll do:
Step 1: Knowledge Test
Written exam covering road rules, vehicle safety, brake systems, and hazard recognition. Think: What would a professional driver need to know? That’s what they’ll ask.
Step 2: Practical Training (Classroom + On-Road)

Step 3: Final Competency Assessment
